Abstract

Photographic and video evidence of beavers (Castor canadensis) scavenging carcasses, including for use in dam construction.

Evidence of fish consumption captured by Steve Berliner and originally shared on his YouTube channel and photography page.

Evidence of cow bones for dam construction captured by Emily Fairfax.

Copy of an unverified YouTube video of a beaver chewing on a fish included for reference.

These observations challenge the assumption that beavers are restricted to a small range of materials that are also preferred foods for their dam building. They also provide evidence that beavers may be engage in osteophagy (bone-gnawing) or opportunistic omnivory when adjacent to salmon-bearing waters.
