Abstract

This resource demonstrates the steps for analyzing High-Resolution Rapid Refresh (HRRR) rainfall forecasts as part of the "Precipitation Frequency and Storm Analysis in Operational Hydrology" HydroLearn module. The module is designed to help students learn how to evaluate rainfall forecasts during Hurricane Helene in Asheville, North Carolina. The resource includes a Python notebook that guides users through retrieving HRRR forecasts, plotting rainfall time series at a selected location, and comparing the forecasted values with NOAA Atlas 14 precipitation frequency estimates. This activity was developed in January 2025 as part of a Cooperative Institute for Research to Operations in Hydrology (CIROH) HydroLearn Hackathon for the development of operational hydrology learning modules.
