Abstract

This resource has the supplementary material for our analysis of how sensitive HAND flood inundation predictions are to river slope choice. Across six case studies and four slope products (IRIS-SWORD, three SWOT variants, and gauge-based S(Q) where available), we found that even order-of-magnitude slope differences only shifted stage by a few metres and barely changed flood-extent skill, likely due to the square-root slope-discharge relationship and channel/floodplain geometry. On our two paired-gauge reaches, the slope-discharge relationship looked kinematic on the Illinois River but backwater-controlled on the Ohio, suggesting this could help screen reaches for hydraulic behavior type.
