Abstract
This repository contains a compiled database of global empirical dissolved oxygen (DO) exchange measurements from streams and rivers reported in the literature between 1964 and 2024. The dataset synthesizes oxygen exchanges, including whole-stream metabolism (gross primary production and ecosystem respiration), encompassing gas exchange; water-column and benthic production and respiration; hyporheic respiration; and sediment oxygen demand. Each row represents an individual empirical exchange measurement, standardized where possible and linked to detailed methodological and environmental metadata.
Associated hydrologic, geomorphic, and biogeochemical variables—including discharge, channel dimensions, water temperature, stream size, land cover, and measurement approach—are provided to support cross-study comparison and reanalysis. Metadata also document study location, temporal resolution, flow permanence, and reporting structure, enabling synthesis across spatial scales and hydrologic regimes.
By consolidating disparate empirical observations into a unified resource, this dataset facilitates meta-analysis, model evaluation, and the identification of data gaps in stream oxygen dynamics, particularly in headwater, non-perennial, and subsurface environments.
