Abstract
This HydroShare resource contains all necessary input data and analysis outputs for the HAND-FIM (Height Above Nearest Drainage – Flood Inundation Mapping) assessment conducted at three reaches along the South Fork Eel River: Leggett, Miranda, and Scotia. The resource supports flood inundation mapping efforts and includes:
- Input Shapefiles: Boundaries defining the analysis area, reach centerlines, and perpendicular transects.
- TUFLOW Model Data: Input files and output rasters for water surface elevation and depth.
- Hydraulic Geometry: Extracted data for transects across a range of discharges.
- Rating Curve Ensembles: Depth vs. discharge data used to generate ensemble rating curves.
- HAND Rasters: Produced at 1-meter and 10-meter spatial resolutions.
- Synthetic Rating Curves: Derived from HAND methodology.
- FIM Agreement Summary: Comparison between HAND-FIM and benchmark inundation extents.
- FIM Bias Summary: Patterns of under and over prediction between HAND-FIM and benchmark inundation extents.
This resource supports ongoing research in scalable flood inundation mapping.

The data contained within this resource were produced for the following paper: 1. Castejon-Villalobos, J., A. Lee, N. Patterson, B. Lane, and C.B. Phillips (2025). Leveraging High-resolution Topography to Advance Parsimonious Reach-scale Flood Inundation Mapping (submitted to Water Resources Research). This paper contains considerable information on how these data were collected and processed. This resource includes 3 zip folders, 1 per study reach (Leggett, Miranda, Scotia). For each site, the following folders are included: 1_Input_shapefiles: Includes 3 files in .shp format. Boundary.shp - Projected Coordinate System: NAD_1983_UTM_Zone_10N. Polygon that depicts the boundaries of the study reach for both TUFLOW and HAND-FIM analysis. Thalweg.shp - Projected Coordinate System: NAD_1983_UTM_Zone_10N. This is the channel centerline following the lowest points along the reach. XSections.shp - Projected Coordinate System: NAD_1983_UTM_Zone_10N.Perpendicular transects to the centerline. Transect spacing for Leggett and Miranda is 10m, and 15m for Scotia. 2_Tuflow: This folder contains the following subfolders: Tuflow_input_parameters: Excel file containing the input parameters for Tuflow simulations. n: Calibrated Manning's n for the study reach in s/m^(1/3). The actual values of discharge in m3/s can be obtained from subfolder 4_Ensemble_Rating_Curves. Projected Coordinate System: NAD_1983_UTM_Zone_10N A typical raster file has the following nomenclature: SFE_Leggett_002_d_010_00.flt SFE: South Fork Eel Leggett: site name (Leggett for the example) 002: Discharge #2 (10% bankfull) d: depth raster (pixel values in meters) 010_00: This value is the same for all rasters. Tuflow simulations are recorded at 10 different time steps, and the 10th timestep is when the simulation is stable. .flt: float format wse: This subfolder contains 11 raster datasets per site corresponding to 11 simulated discharges. Simulated discharges began at 5% bankfull (Q1) and then increased in 10% increments from 10 % to the bankfull flow (Q2 to Q11).
