Abstract

This HydroShare collection brings together the principal geospatial and visual products developed through a continental-scale synthesis of hydrologic landscapes and dominant hydrologic processes across North America. The collection serves as the shared data archive for two companion studies. The first of these describes the delineation of the North American continent into a hierarchical set of five high-level domains and 35 smaller hydrologic provinces, based on extensive expert consultation supported by geospatial data. The second of these describes perceptual models of hydrologic behaviour for each domain and province, based on expert consultation, literature review, and insights from research watersheds.

Together, these studies describe regional differences in climate, land cover, subsurface properties, water storage, hydrologic fluxes, and dominant flow paths across North America. Organizing these products within a single HydroShare collection preserves their relationships while allowing each resource to retain its own metadata, documentation, citation, and persistent identifier, thereby supporting the findability, accessibility, interpretation, citation, and reuse of the project outputs. The collection contains three related, independently citable resources:

1. The geospatial delineation of five high-level hydrologic domains and 35 hydrologic provinces;
2. Illustrations synthesizing dominant hydrologic processes across the five domains;
3. Hydrologic perceptual model illustrations and supporting fact sheets for the 35 provinces.

Hydrological Perceptual Models of the 35 Provinces of North America This resource contains 35 PNG perceptual-model illustrations, one for each hydrologic province. The illustrations presented in Figures 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 of McMillan et al. (2026) paper (in-prep) correspond respectively to provinces within the Northern, Western, Central, Eastern, and Islands domains. The resource also includes a common symbol legend, domain reference maps, and two companion 35-page province fact-sheet PDFs. For each province, corresponding pages in the two PDFs jointly present 12 regional characteristics derived from geospatial datasets, including climate, cryosphere, subsurface, land-cover, disturbance, population, and runoff attributes.
Hydrological Process Illustrations of the Five Domains of North America This resource contains five illustrations synthesizing the dominant hydrologic processes associated with the Northern, Western, Central, Eastern, and Islands domains. The illustrations are presented in Figures 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 of Knoben et al. (2026) paper (in-prep). Both presentation-ready PNG files and editable source files are provided, together with documentation describing the contents and intended uses.
Hierarchical Classification of the Hydrologic landscapes of the North American Continent This resource contains the geospatial delineations of the five high-level hydrologic domains and 35 hydrologic provinces developed using the continental Hydrologic Mosaic framework and described by Knoben et al. (2026) paper (in-prep). The domain and province boundaries are provided as openly accessible geospatial files, including shapefiles, together with supporting metadata and documentation describing their organization and development.
