Abstract

This resource contains the data, R scripts, cached Monte Carlo inputs, and documentation needed to reproduce the analyses reported in the paper “Beyond precipitation deficit: driver-based classification of hydrological droughts in an Alpine Basin.” The package reproduces the centered 30-day multibasin streamflow-drought classification and associated sensitivity analyses for 23 study basins in the upper Adige River basin, South Tyrol, Italy. The workflow generates the figures and intermediate outputs under outputs/generated/. Users are kindly requested to cite this HydroShare resource and the related paper, as appropriate, when using the data, code, or generated outputs contained herein.

Hydrological drought typology classifier

This HydroShare resource is a reproducibility package for the centered 30-day multibasin streamflow-drought classification and the sensitivity analyses. It contains the exact input files used by the scripts, the cached 1,000-run Monte Carlo experiment, portable R code, and documentation. The workflow populates outputs/generated/ with figures, intermediate RDS files, tables, and logs.

  • inputs/: the five primary input tables and the cached Monte Carlo result used by the analysis.
  • code/: portable R scripts. No script depends on the original local path.
  • outputs/generated/: populated by the default reproduction workflow with figures, intermediate RDS files, tables, and logs.
  • environment/: R and package versions plus an optional Docker recipe.
  • docs/: workflow, data dictionary, provenance, and publication notes.

Quick start

Use R 4.3.2. From the root of this downloaded resource, run:

sh Rscript --vanilla code/run_all.R

run_all.R executes the seven numbered reproduction scripts in separate R sessions. Logs are written to outputs/generated/logs/run_all/.

run_all.R creates and populates outputs/generated/ and must be run from the resource root before running any of the later scripts individually.

The workflow uses the included 1,000-run Monte Carlo result. The Monte Carlo simulation is not rerun; the packaged result is the analysis product supporting the corresponding paper figure and is used for post-processing and plotting. The historical generation implementation is retained under code/source_original/ for provenance.

Analysis sequence

  1. 01_centered_analysis.R: centered 30-day preprocessing, event detection and classification, duration sensitivity, Monte Carlo post-processing, and core results.
  2. 02_replot_labelled_figures.R: publication labels and final probability/share/Monte Carlo figure layouts.
  3. 03_trailing_30d_sensitivity.R: trailing-window alternative and comparisons with the centered catalogue.
  4. 04_headwater_sensitivity.R: headwater subset analysis, with Passirio_Merano classified as downstream.
  5. 05_compare_event_catalogues.R: comparable centered, trailing, and headwater summary figures.
  6. 06_aet_pet_stress_sensitivity.R: alternative hot-and-dry classification based on AET/PET stress.
  7. 07_baseline_delta_analysis.R: seasonal baseline probability and anomaly-associated probability-change analysis.

Input coverage

The hydrometeorological inputs span 1990-01-01 to 2023-10-01, depending on the variable. The fixed classification period in the analysis is 1992-10-01 to 2023-09-30. The files describe 23 study basins in the upper Adige River system in South Tyrol, Italy.

File formats, variables, units, and unit caveats are documented in docs/data_dictionary.md. The exact software environment is recorded under environment/.
