Abstract
This dataset presents microplastic characterization data collected from a popular recreational cenote in the Riviera Maya, Mexico, using Laser Direct Infrared (LDIR) chemical imaging at Northern Illinois University. Water samples were collected hourly from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM to assess temporal variation in microplastic concentration and composition. This preliminary release includes samples from the 9:00 AM–12:00 PM period; analysis of the remaining afternoon samples (12:00 PM–5:00 PM) will be completed and released later this year.
The dataset includes:
1. Raw LDIR particle data
2. Cleaned datasets incorporating calculated polymer density values and derived mass concentrations (e.g., µg/L)
3. Tourism data including tourism counts, geochemistry data, mass concentration values, and total MP particle data
4. The R scripts used to process raw LDIR output into cleaned data and to conduct statistical and visual analyses in RStudio.
5. The statistical results: density and particle size trends were assessed via linear regression, and shape distribution via a chi-square test
