Abstract
This repository contains raw data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Clean Watersheds Needs Surveys (CWNS), from 1984 through 2022, as CSV files. Data from 2000, 2004, 2012, and 2022 is already publicly available on EPA's website; however, because the 2000-2012 data requires proprietary software to open (Microsoft Access), we provide the CSV versions herein. Additionally, this repository contains the pre-2000's data, which was not previously posted online, but available through request to the EPA (cwns@epa.gov) Please note that, of the pre-2000 data, only the 1996 survey has an associated key, and usage notes from EPA regarding the pre-2000 data are provided in the 'historic data file notes from EPA.txt' file. Lastly, we include a crosswalk, titled unit_process_crosswalk.csv, to assist users in navigating changes in unit process naming conventions between 2000 and 2022; this crosswalk is based on past work by El Abbadi et al. 2025.
