Abstract

This resource holds sample datasets and work products from Platte River near Grand Island, Nebr. - USGS-06770500 site from groups participating in the PEP2026 Workshop. Pixels to Enviro Patterns 2026 (PEP2026), is a two-day workshop at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln (Nebraska), where cameras, AI, and storytelling converge for scientific discovery. Held March 7–8 at Hardin Hall on East Campus, PEP 2026 invites researchers, educators, and creatives to explore open imagery and dive into hands-on learning with GRIME AI software. Collaborate on mini-projects to turn pixels into environmental patterns that drive scientific inquiry and narratives. Whether you’re passionate about water, phenology, artificial intelligence, or communication, this is your chance to connect, create, and be inspired.

Datasets are curated for use with GRIME AI software, which is available as a Conda package (https://anaconda.org/channels/GRIMELab/packages/grime-ai/overview) with source code and Wiki on GitHub (https://github.com/JohnStranzl/GRIME-AI/wiki) GRIME AI is free, open-source software (Apache 2.0). GRIME AI leverages Meta's Segment Anything 2 (SAM2) model for image segmentation and also facilitates the entire data science workflow, from data retrieval to model deployment.

Site Description LOCATION: Lat 40°52'28", long 98°16'54" referenced to North American Datum of 1927, in SW 1/4 SW 1/4 sec.31, T.11 N., R.8 W., Merrick County, NE, Hydrologic Unit 10200101, 5.2 mi southeast of Grand Island, and at mile 70.0. DRAINAGE AREA: 57,650 mi² of which 4,710 mi² probably is noncontributing. PERIOD OF RECORD October 1933 to current year. REVISIONS HISTORY WSP 956: 1935. WSP 1390: 1942. WDR NE-94-1: Drainage area. GAGE Water-stage recorder with satellite telemetry. Datum of gage is 1,829.90 ft above National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 (Nebraska Department of Highway's benchmark). Prior to Oct.23, 1933, nonrecording gage at bridge 68 ft downstream at datum 2.00 ft higher, and Oct. 23, 1933 to Aug. 19, 1980, water-stage recorder at site 90 ft downstream at datum 2.00 ft higher. Aug. 19, 1980 to Aug. 22, 2002, at present site at datum 2.00 ft higher. REMARKS Accuracy of records for water years prior to 2014 are noted in the individual Annual Data Reports for those water years. For water years 2014 onward, records good except for estimated daily discharges, which are poor, unless otherwise noted. Natural flow of stream affected by transmountain diversions, storage reservoirs, power developments, groundwater withdrawals and diversions for irrigation, and return flow from irrigated areas. EXTREMES FOR PERIOD OF RECORD Prior to closure of Kingsley Dam in 1941, maximum discharge, 30,000 ft³/s, June 6, 1935, gage height, 5.99 ft, datum then in use, from rating curve extended above 18,000 ft³/s; no flow at times during 1934-41. Since beginning of storage in Lake McConaughy in 1942, maximum peak flow, 23,900 ft³/s, June 30, 1983, gage height, 5.97 ft, datum then in use. Maximum peak gage height 7.79 ft, January 21, 2016.
