Abstract

The Southern Hills Aquifer System (SHAS), a part of the Coastal Lowlands Aquifer System, comprises of a series of complexly interbedded, sandy, and clayey strata in age from Holocene to Miocene, dipping south toward the Gulf of Mexico. A lithology model for the SHAS was utilized as model structure to develop a 3D groundwater flow model for the Louisiana Capital Area Groundwater Conservation District (CAGCD). The lithology model was developed using the approach (Vahdat-Aboueshagh and Tsai, 2021) and 4577 drillers’ logs and 727 electric logs that were interpreted into a sequence of high-permeability sand facies and low-permeability clay facies. The lithology model was built on a 3D unstructured grid of 1,145,363 cells and stored in the VTU (Visualization Toolkit for unstructured grids) format. Each 3D cell has a different number of surrounding 3D cells to connect to and is labelled either sand (Cell Material=1) or clay cell (Cell Material=0).
